GENERAL POCKETTEST INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

These step-by-step instructions will take you start to finish and have you up and running the PocketTest software on a PalmPilot. No PalmPilot experience is required. However, if you need help, don't hesitate to call Patrick at 256-370-7373 .

I. PALMPILOT BASICS

1. First, you'll need a PalmPilot. You can purchase one of these nifty PDA's (personal digital assistants) at most any office supply store, like a Office Max, Office Depot, or Staples. They are also for sale on the internet. Try www.priceline.com for prices. PocketTest software will run on any model PalmPilot, but will NOT run on PocketPC/WindowsCE devices (yet!). So make sure to get a PalmOS compatible device.

2. Attach the PalmPilot cradle cable to your computer and install the Palm Desktop software using the CDROM that came with your PalmPilot if you haven't already done so.

3. Check the batteries. Turn the PalmPilot on and tap the "Applications" button (the little house). The battery meter is at the top. Low battery levels can cause HotSync problems.

II. REMOVING ANY PREVIOUS VERSIONS

If you previously installed an older version of the software on your PalmPilot, you should first remove the old version. If this is the first time you have ever installed the program, skip to "V. Installing the Program Files" below.

NOTE: This procedure will erase any old bookmarks and quiz scores from the old program.

To remove any old version of the software:

1. Turn on your PalmPilot
2. Tap the Applications button (the little house) at the bottom left of the glass.
3. Tap the Title bar (the blue tab at the top of the screen) to bring down the menus, then tap the 'App:Delete' menu.
4. Look for the name of the product you are installing. It will resemble the name of the test you are taking and will be something like (PrvtPlt,IPilot,CPilot,FundInst,FltInst,ATPilot1,ATPilot2, or FltEngr).
5. Tap the name of the product to select it, then tap the 'Delete' button, and 'Yes'.
6. If you see more than one file with that name, or a similar name, like 'PrvtPltDB', delete that file also.

III. DOWNLOADING THE SOFTWARE

1. If you haven't already done so, proceed to www.pockettest.com and click on "Downloads".
2. Select the PocketTest software that you want. If you have a Windows computer, and a ".PRC" file is available, select that one. Otherwise, select the ".ZIP" file.
3. When presented with the option, select "Save to Disk". Remember where you put it! :)

IV. UNZIPPING THE ZIP FILE

1. Locate the 'zip' file that you downloaded earlier, and double-click on it.
2. If the computer asks "Which program should I use to open this file?", then you'll need to follow the instructions below to obtain an unzip program. If not, skip to "Installing the Program Files", below.

Windows instructions

1. Log on to the internet.
2. Open your browser and go to www.download.com
3. Type 'zip' in the search field on the web page, and hit the search button.
4. Download and install the "WinZip" program that appears at the top of the list. Answer the prompts until it finishes.
5. Double-click the zip file that you previously downloaded from www.pockettest.com .

Macintosh instructions

1. Log on to the Internet.
2. Open your browser and go to http://www.aladdinsys.com/expander
3. Download and install the "Stuffit Expander" program. Answer the prompts until it finishes.
4. Double-click the zip file that you previously downloaded from www.pockettest.com .

V. INSTALLING THE PROGRAM FILES

Note: These instructions are for Private Pilot version. Other programs are named similarly.

There are two files to install for the Private Pilot PocketTest software:

• PPILOT.PRC
• PPILOTDB.PDB

These files should be installed using the normal Palm Install Tool program that came on the CD with your PalmOS device.

If you're unfamiliar with the Palm Install Tool, here's how to do it step-by-step:

1. If you haven't already done so, install the Desktop application software that came with your PalmOS device, and Hotsync your PalmPilot for the first time by putting it in the cradle and pressing the Hotsync button.
2. Open the Install Tool dialog box using one of the following methods:
   
   A. Click the Install button on the Palm Desktop application’s Launch Bar.
   
   or
   
   B. Click the Start button, highlight Programs, highlight Palm Desktop, and select Install Tool.
   
   
3. In the Install Tool dialog box, click the User selector and select the correct user from the list.
4. Click Add.
5. In the Open dialog box, select the CDROM drive and then the folder of the desired product, such as "PrivatePilot"
6. Select the "PPILOT.PRC" file (wherever you put it after downloading), and click OK.
7. Click Add again.
8. Select the "PPILOT.PDB" file and click OK.
9. Click Done.
10. HOTSYNC! Place your PalmPilot in the cradle and press the HotSync button.

Congratulations! You've installed the program.

NOTE: The Airline Transport Pilot PocketTest has two .PRC files and two .PDB files. Install all four.

VI. REGISTRATION

The software installs initially as a free demo, but can be fully licensed in minutes by purchasing a registration key online at www.PocketTest.com or calling 256-370-7373.

After the HotSync is complete from "V. Installing the Software" (above), tap on the Applications button (the little house), and look for an airplane icon labeled 'PrivPlt'. Tap on the icon to launch to program.

You will be asked for your registration key, which is listed on your purchase receipt.

If you do not yet have a registration key, you can tap the "Demo" button to use the program, but the program will be limited to only one category of questions.

Tap on the line after "Key, please:", then tap on the dot by the '123' in the bottom right corner of the writing area. This will bring up a number keypad, where you should enter you registration key, then tap 'DONE' and 'OK'.

VII. BUILT-IN HELP & USER'S MANUAL

The software contains a built-in help and user manual. To access the information, launch the PocketTest program, and from the main screen , tap the menu button (just below the little house) and select the "Help" menu.
